Testing the Hypothesis, Part One

Mental Health among children is not talked about and easily overlooked because society does not normalize it.

The people who have this need are in the early childhood stages (under eight years old). Not everyone shares the need. However, many people I know suffer from mental illness and a lot of issues start from childhood. The boundaries of my needs are understanding the importance of mental health, the acceptance of it, the need for costly effected drugs or therapy and question if people are willing to help the cause. People will not see it in the same way that others may because the question of a child having a mental illness is difficult to understand. However, the opposing argument outstands the opposition. Mental health is being talked about more because of college student dropouts, school shootings and increased suicides.

Interview with Liora Hammer, Pharmacy Tech.

1. In a range, how many prescriptions do you fill for children under the age of 8?
60-70 per week. Liora feels as if it is overprescribed and that a form of therapy will help the child be treated more naturally.

2. What are the medications?
ADHD medications: Adderall, vivance & Focalin Anti-depressants (low dosage), anti-anxiety, seizer medication for Tourette’s

3. What are the side effects for young children?
Positive- a lot of people says it helps their kids
Negative- you are on it the rest of your life once you start it. You become very reliant on it so your body doesn’t know how to function without it. It makes you feel off and blocks natural chemicals for early childhood development.

4. What type of healthcare is used to buy this medication?
80% of the prescribed mental illness medication for children under 8 are on state-provided health insurance due to low income. This state-provided health insurance limits kids to better medication or forms of therapy because the state only provides you with basic needs. Tons of kids are on state insurance, which goes to show a lot of families can’t afford to get therapy for the kids so it's probably why they want to give their kid an easy fix.

5. Do you feel doctors are trying to help these kids, is it what the parents want or is it based on the insurance payback?
50/50 a lot of doctors are just doing whatever the patients parents want. If the kid would do better in therapy, they don’t stand up for it. They do what the parents want regardless of the medication effects it has on the child. Also, too many parents have doctors personal cell phone numbers so I can tell a doctor is annoyed when they put in a medication order from an angry, persistent parent. There is a lack of honest communication between parents and doctors.

Interview with Deirdre Rhodes, ASD Para Professional
1. What are the mental illnesses of the students you teach? Do you know if most are from low socio-economic families?

Autistic, Some drug babies, some bipolar and some psychotic children. Not necessarily from low economic families, a lot of the cases are hereditary. Parents can have ADHD and when they have a child their symptoms will be worse.
Most of them are on Medicaid.

2.  What type of toys do they play with? What types of exercises as coping methods?
They enjoy a smaller confined area and do better with less stimulation.  Autistic children like games they can touch. They like different textures. Check out Bouncing, jump and swing, teeter-totters, building and Special Olympics.

3. Do parents often push medication onto their child? Do you believe therapy is a better use of time?
No. They try every other method first unless the child is out of control.
It depends on the therapy and how much they go and if it's not overdone. One child goes to therapy 5 times a week for long periods of times, she doesn’t have time to play and she is becoming brainwashed. However, Sometimes children need therapy to hold a pencil. You will never see two autistic child’s that are the same.

4.  Do you think children without mental illness look down upon children who do? If so, do you think it’s because they don’t understand what it is?
Yes, if they are not educated. They could be afraid of them. They don’t know how to approach them or how to deal with them.

5. If you could magically change one thing about the topic being discussed so that it made your life better, easier, or more enjoyable what would it be?
I would like to see them get all the services possible. Their speech, OT, medical care, physical care, all the care that they need. Doctors don’t take Medicaid anymore, so sometimes they are hopeless. It would be nice to have summer programs or therapeutic camp.

Heather Covalt, Former Baby Sitter

1. How often have you babysat/nannied? Did any of them have a mental illness?
Over 20 families since I was 12. However, as I got older I kept myself full time to only two families. There was one family that had a mental illness for sure. He required counseling and special assistance from someone other than a primary care system. I was the go-to nanny for a difficult child.

2. How did the parents react to mental illness?
The parent was resistant to input from me or physicians if there was an issue with their child. They would try any other possible method to help their child but not be quick to addressing mental illness.

3. How do you think a child would take to understanding mental health?
I'm not entirely sure because kids have triggers and every child is different. There needs to be a collaboration with parents.

4. What is the parental involvement for children with mental illnesses? What are some stories?
It’s hard because parents work and there are a lot of single parents. There are a lot more resources now than there ever were before, not saying there is enough, but parents can exhaust all sources. Most of the parents I interacted with, they were in denial and hesitant. If they were open to their child having a developmental curve, they could attack it sooner and it could have been much better for the child.
Even educators could not do all they wanted to do. Teachers always want more time to spend on the child so they can do their job but they can’t because of the parent or education system.
Children also know when they are being talked about. They know when something is off with them.
I will always remember babysitting for one kid. The child is three and his brother is 1 ½ and the three-year-old shoved his brother off the steps. I tried explaining why that’s a bad idea and the kid did not care at all. He said he wanted to see him cry and fall. Maybe, he did it to see a reaction but he couldn’t fully explain it back to me.
When I tried explaining to the mother, she called the child exuberant.
There was another instance where the parents got him a bow and arrow and the child started shooting at his brothers and sisters. When I took the bow and arrow away and threw them out the child started kicking me and screaming very loudly. Still, nothing happened.
Some other families have a history of mental illness. Parents would try to stay aware of certain signs so they can tackle the problem early on. They were much better of being aware of those signs and they were proactive in treating any possible mental illness.

5. If you could magically change one thing about the topic being discussed so that it made your life better, easier, or more enjoyable what would it be?!
People need to be educated so that people, friends, family and the child understands. Develop a proper support system. Whether it’s a child or parents that withdraws, education would help. Education for all people. Starting young because we don’t address it until high school. This should not be a bad thing. Education and acceptance are a big deal.

Dominic Coleman, College Student

1. Did you have an education on mental illness?

I did not have an education on mental illness until I saw a therapist. I never wanted to talk about how I was feeling. Being a guy, sometimes your friends aren't understanding. You are thought to be tough. However, I was struggling. When I was three years old, my mom left me. I don't think much about it but after therapy, I realized it has had a big effect on me.

2. Do you think mental health should be talked about among children?
I am not entirely sure how you could convey the message to a child. I did not understand it much then. However, if you find a way, it probably would have been helpful to me.

3. How would you talk to a child about mental illness? How would you want to make a child feel better about their mental illness?

Like I said before, I don't know how that could be conveyed to a child. If I think about my personal situation, I am grateful to have my dad. He was already remarried when he regained custody of me and now the only mom I think of is my stepmom. I have 4 younger brothers and one younger sister. I am happy to have my family.

4. Do you wish you could have got help sooner?

Yes, but I wouldn't go until I got to my lowest point. If I knew about mental health and I felt comfortable talking about it before, I might not be feeling how I do. I am happy that I am finally getting the help I need.

Rahmann Brown, College Student

1. Did you have an education on Mental Health?

I was always aware of different mental health issues. I knew that it ran in my family but I never thought it would happen to me.

2. How have you been dealing with your mental health?

Since dropping out of school, I have been focusing on myself. I don't put too much on my plate and I make an effort to do activities that make me happy. I also was into a number of drugs in college. Now, I watch the social drinking and drugs that I do and make sure I don't go overboard.

3. Do you think talking to children about mental health is a good idea?
Yeah. I would put it in ways that they can understand. I would play with them and talk to kids more. I would raise awareness so hopefully, they can always have it in the back of their mind.

4. Do you wish you could have got help sooner?
Sometimes. But, I believe everything happens for a reason. Right now, I'm just chilling. I don't mind the path I am on.

Summary

I still stand with my original plan. Mental health should be talked about more among children. There is too much evidence that supports the idea that people don't take it seriously. How can people control what goes on in their minds? Especially, since their minds are not in the right place? Our livelihood depends on functioning as human-beings and using our minds to do so. Through my interviews, I learned a lot about medications for children with mental illnesses. I did not realize how medications could be a negative effect on children. It makes a lot of sense since it is a drug. I also was shocked to find out about parents reactions and involvement in their child's mental health. Parent's might want what's best for their children but some parents need to get over their ego.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

https://www.neweurope.eu/article/economic-opportunities-for-thousands-of-refugees-across-uganda/

I found this article, Economic Opportunities for thousands of Refugees across Uganda, by typing in economic opportunities into Google and searching in the news tab. I believed that there is an opportunity from the headline of the article and reading the article. The customer of the economic opportunity will be the Uganda refugees communities. I think that the idea of training refugees in business and financial skills to help the inclusion of refugee camps from the north, south and west is easy to exploit because if there was no need for the skills, the skills would not have been taught.

I saw this opportunity because European Investment Bank and Centenary Bank are acting in a charitable way to help the refugees in Uganda. I admire this because of my previous experience with United Way of North Central Florida. The organization would give help with completing taxes for free.

http://www.netnewsledger.com/2019/05/30/amc-and-manitoba-plant-joint-economic-opportunities/

I found this article, AMC and Manitoba Plant Joint Economic Opportunities, by typing in economic opportunities in Google and searching in the news tab. I believed that there is an opportunity from the headline of the article and reading this article. The customer of this opportunity is both the AMC and the Province of Manitoba. I think that this opportunity is difficult to exploit because of the history between the first nation and province protectors. I really want to believe that people have good intentions because it is the 21st century, but I think tribes get the short end of the stick.

If everything works out, I do believe that there is an opportunity for economic development because they are sharing the wealth and prosperity of the lands. Also, both parties will have an equal pull in handling the responsibilities of the land.

https://www.ftadviser.com/mortgages/2019/05/31/landlords-sell-up-as-regulatory-changes-bite/

I found this article, Landlords sell up as Regulatory Changes Bite, by typing in regulatory changes and trends in Google and searching in the news tab. I believe there is an opportunity because of the reasons why landlords are choosing to sell with every tax increase. The customer is the landlord, whether or not they are being thought of as a customer. In order to have apartments, you need to have landlords or apartment companies. The opportunity is to listen to landlords, increased taxes has caused rebellions. Decreased taxes have caused recessions. There needs to be a happy medium. Therefore, I do believe that this opportunity is difficult to exploit.

I see the opportunity here because I have spent a year working in apartment complexes. Personally, I do not think this type of work is for me. I don't think fair housing laws rule in the favor of tenants and sometimes landlords.

https://www.beckersspine.com/spine/item/45811-the-regulatory-changes-spine-surgeons-want-most.html

I found this article, The Regulatory Changes Spine Surgeons want most, by typing in regulatory changes in Google and searching in the news tab. I believe there is an opportunity in this article because patients can't afford proper health insurance and doctors are not being paid enough. It sounds like both parties are fighting for the same thing. Doctors do not want to see unsafe procedures done on patients and they want to work. The opportunity is to put stricter laws on health insurances or reform them. This opportunity is difficult to exploit. This has been an issue for years and I don't believe that it will be an easy fix.

I see the opportunity in this situation because my family and I have opted out of going to doctors because of health insurance. This is a real issue among people who don't have the opportunity to get the help they need.

Identifying Local Opportunities

I searched for local opportunities near my hometown.

https://www.heraldtribune.com/news/20190530/sarasota-orchestra-looks-outside-city-limits-for-new-home

Sarasota Orchestra looks outside city limits for new home.

The Sarasota Orchestra has been looking for a new home since 2001. They had two locations in mind but due to funds and the city councils denial, they both fell through. Now, they are looking outside of the Sarasota City limits because they want a space to match with its four critical success factors.

The problem is that the Sarasota Orchestra has to look outside of Sarasota for a newer and bigger location.

I believe that both Sarasota and the Orchestra have the problem because the orchestra might lose money moving to a less populous city and Sarasota might lose income too. However, the opportunity is that the orchestra will give neighboring cities more economic income.

Sarasota Rosemary District Zoning Density Overlay Update.

The Rosemary District has raised its maximum density from 25 units per acre to 75 units per acre in 2015 and is looking to raise it to 100 by the end of this year.

The problem is that residents are worried about the price hike it will have on the community and if they could afford it anymore.

The residents essentially have the problem because if they can't afford it, someone else can. The opportunity is the economic growth in the Rosemary district.

Sarasota County Mote Aquarium Economic Impact Funding

The Mote Aquarium requested to build a state-of-art aquarium. However, with the bigger aquarium raises questions on the return of investment. Sarasota County is waiting for a new business plan from the Mote Aquarium before they make a decision.

The problem is the question of the return investment to the community. Will it bring tourism? Will people want to have their events there?

The problem can go either way. However, I think the real problem lies within the Mote Aquarium because they want to attract more tourists but they are being questioned with their business plans if they could achieve their goals. If they can't achieve their goals and they are approved, they could have wasted a lot of the city's money. There is an opportunity for economic development and growth, but it is risky.

Residents fill county workshop on celery fields ask for less development.

James Gabbert has plans to build quads and a waste transfer stadium surrounding celery fields. Sarasota County approved the plan and residents are fighting back because they are worried about the environment and the future generations to come.

The problem is the loss of agriculture in Sarasota County and the environmental impact it has on the lands.

Future generations have the problem that the current generation might cause. The opportunity will be economic growth and development.

Sarasota County Re-evaluating their approach to Evacuation Shelters

Sarasota County is looking at different places to uphold hurricane disasters. The city is thinking of finding stronger buildings, such as Taylor Ranch Elementary School. They also want to make shelters that are only for medically dependent citizens.

The problem is a future problem, getting enough people into the shelters and regulating the medically dependent citizens. Most Floridians are not scared of hurricanes, so they might not respond. With that being said, maybe the problem is the hurricane.

People who are targeted by hurricanes have the problem.

My Entrepreneurship Story

Color Guard Captain

During my senior year of high school, I was the captain of my color guard. At the time of tryouts, I did not believe how hard it was going to be. I thought I was just going to call the shots of discipline for my guard. For instance, when someone was goofing off, I thought I just simply had to tell them to be quiet. While the job did entail the discipline description, I encountered the hardships of my first leadership experience.

Girls are chatty. Girls in high school are dramatic and chatty. Trouble was always on the rise among chatty and dramatic girls. As a leader, I had to get the girls back on track about what was important: having fun, working hard and winning a competition. It was crucial to hear both sides of one story and then work through the problem. I could not dismiss their feelings because they would lose focus and remain angry. At the time, I was at the beginning of my leadership journey and when I think back to it, there were things I could have done better. However, I appreciate the chance to learn and go through the experience because leaders have to start off somewhere.

One of the most important things about my experience as a guard captain was learning to say I was wrong. Everyone makes mistakes. I felt the pressure to always know the right thing but I am not a robot! I do not have the intelligence or wisdom at the age of 17. I also found that my guard had more respect for me when I apologized for my mistakes.

At the end of my journey, I knew that I would not change it for the world and cherish the people I grew close too. Plus, we received straight superiors at our last competition!

Bug List

I actually really enjoy the idea of a bug list and find this assignment to be therapeutic.

Bug List

1. I am bugged by the idea that a driver does not look before they pull out of a parking space.
 - They more than likely forgot to look because they were thinking about something else. Perhaps, they had a stressful day.

2. I am bugged by my roommates not cleaning around the house as often as I do.
- I know that my roommates had parents who picked up after them, and to be honest, so did I. However, I know that if I don't do it, no one will. Perhaps, it is their busy schedule.

3. I get bugged by history. To be more specific, the way women are not treated as men.  I have been watching a lot of shows placed in the 1700s and 1800s, so times are coming around but there is still a little bit of a lag.
- I can't really explain why history was this way other than women is the inferior sex in the eyes of many.

4. I am bugged by my own tardiness.
- I know it's because I have a great bed and I love to sleep. I also know it's because I stay up late. I could be more responsible.

5. I am bugged by fruit flies sneaking into my house.
- It is always just one fruit fly, however, why do they have to be there? Well, I think its because sometimes the door is left open and they get in.

6. I am bugged by the end of a wine bottle.
- I am not an alcoholic. However, I could always go for one more glass of wine. Plus, one wine bottle between two people is only two glasses!

7. I am bugged by fighting/arguments based on religions.
- I know this is something we will never change. I know that not all religions seem fair. I am just someone who respects peoples beliefs and I don't understand the meaning of changing ideas if it's a part of someone's culture.

8. I am bugged by bosses not doing the right thing because of their position.
- I have had a personal experience where a boss had the authority to change/erase his mistakes because he had the authority to view different pages on the office website. I don't find it honorable and I lost respect for him. I quit the job shortly after.

9. I am bugged by not having enough money as a college student.
- I live off of loans and scholarships, and I can't wait to get the chance to have enough money where I am not under financial stress!

10. I am bugged by being let down by the people closest to me.
- I think that I expect more from the people who are close to me. However, I think when you expect more from someone, you are opening the door for disappointment.

11. I am bugged doing laundry.
- I am just lazy. But I would have to say doing laundry is a very tedious chore. Maybe because it is a "hurry up and wait" activity. I have to hurry up to clean, wait while it is in the washer and dryer, then I have to hurry up and fold so it doesn't wrinkle. "Ain't nobody got time for that!"

12. I am bugged by people who do 10 miles under the speed limit.
- I got somewhere to be! Move it! Maybe, they are old and can not see like they used too. Maybe, they are scared of driving.

13. I am bugged by plans falling through.
- If I take out time to do an activity, I get excited. When plans fall through, I get sad. Simple as that.

14. I am bugged by the process of moving to new places.
- I love new adventures, but the moving process is quite exhausting. When a student moves, they normally have 10+ days of being homeless, so storage units are normally required. Moving requires a lot of packing, unpacking and time.

15. I am bugged by my own procrastination.
- Why am I like this? It is almost like a race for me. Perhaps, I think I work better under pressure. However, I would do better with more time. I should change this.

16. I am bugged by ordering something new on a menu and being disappointed with how it tastes.
- I am all for trying new things! I just so want to enjoy new food and then it tastes gross. This is probably because I have too high expectations.

17. I am bugged with how quick I run out of dry shampoo.
- I think they only put so much in a bottle so that people can buy more.

18. I am bugged when people don't wash their hands after they go to the bathroom.
- Has this ever happened to you when you are in a public bathroom? I am bugged because of all the germs! I don't understand why people do this. This is just gross. But if I have to guess, maybe they are running late to be somewhere.

19. I am bugged by low-calorie foods not filling me up.
-  I want to eat healthy, but can I also be filled up? Maybe, it is because my stomach is used to consuming more foods.

20. I am bugged by spoilers.
- Let me enjoy the movie! I think people do this because their excitement confuses their judgment to keep things in secret.

Reflection

This assignment was actually a lot harder to complete. When I thought I thought of everything, I was only on number five. This assignment almost turned into my diary at some points. I think it was hard to complete because I don't want to think about everything that bugs me. If I focus on the negatives, how am I going to be happy?
